Terrorism, a new face
Yesterday night I was watching India-England ODI match and was thrilled about India’s performance and success. I was exulted in a deep sense of fulfilment. It was not a one man’s show but a whole team’s effort. The team showed the world what it can do when it unites. I had my head high on my shoulders and then.. Then during an ad break, I switched the channel.
I was horrified. It was a news channel.
Mumbai was under attack.
I always thought these places of the city were safe from any kind of calamity unlike crowded local trains or cinema halls. The places I have been to umpteen no. of times and enjoyed their warmth and hospitality were done with by a handful of maniacs whom I call mentally retarded.
My previous post tells you the gist of sequence.
On being asked by some fishermen they yelled back saying they were students. Students of terrorism I guess ?? They confidently moved in sets of two’s to different landmarks and heritage centers and ruthlessly, mindlessly raped the city.
Thank you very much for all your wishes and concerns in the form of messages, mails and comments. I am ok, humbled and so are my near & dear ones.
Isn’t it ironic that the strangers from all over the world were concerned about me and my dears but the neighbour I should be comfortable with, was out there to finish me off ?
This was an act of well planned, co-ordinated and well executed terrorism.
Gone are the religion backed beards, pathani suits, dirty looks and other associated characteristics. Today we have young, smart, clean shaven, educated and well trained terrorist who, besides handling a sophisticated weapon, can easily play with technology and take on anyone who comes in his way. He kills with pleasure and hatred.
Every time he finds an improved way to yield the much wanted results. So confident he is of his success that it shows on his emotionless face. He has no religion, no fear of God and he is not afraid of dying as well.
I haven’t stopped watching the news, and as the minutes turn into hours, I feel more and more so numb, so incredibly angry, and so very sad. People are asking me to stay safe but how ?
As I write this post, the drama still continues after 30 hours of non stop war.
How long ? How long we are going to live our lives in fear ? And how long we are going to tolerate it ?
I believe a person who is so well brain washed against humanity, cannot be convinced through any method of making him sane. Giving him minor punishments for the sake of improving his behaviour is all well dreamt thought which I do not approve of.
As one of the terrorists spoke to a TV channel today (I have recorded some part of conversation, will have to check the quality), nothing matters to them and they do not want any negotiations also. It’s a do or die situation for them. They are psychos. Period.
But India will walk on.. .. in the spirit of humanity.. by taking it’s people along, by making us heard, like our wholesome cricket team, in whatever little way we can, to show the world that it is impossible to break us down.

Cuckoo, glad to hear you’re okay. This is just such an utterly sad situation. I saw the news late last evening as I flipping channels on the TV and was shocked. I had to call my immediate family who had no idea what was going on. A large part of my dad’s family still lives in Mumbai and for the longest time we couldnt even get the phone lines through to them. Luckily, we were finally able to talk to them this morning and they’re all fine. But our helplessness over the entire situation there makes me so angry. It isnt always easy living away from home, and things like these dont necessarily make it any easier. I am not even going to try and understand what goes on in a terrorist’s mind because it defies all understanding. For the life of me, I cannot understand what cause would justify putting so many innocent lives at stake. No cause, no matter how much you believe in it, is worth this. And yes, you are absolutely right, regular punishment just isnt sufficient enough to change someone who has sold out his/her soul to a cause. The whole situation sickens me. Like you too, Mumbai is home for me in India and some of these are places I have been to before and have fond memories of. It just saddens me endlessly.

Dear Blogger,
thank for your beautiful post. Really hope India will stand in front of these threats and will win.
Let me tell you that all the world, even the old Europe, is beside you.
India is among the best of our hopes for the future of the world. You will win, be sure of it.

Yes, it’s hard to break down the spirit, but then I think its time India hit back like it should have ages ago. I mean, look at Israel… terrorists took 11 of their players in 1972, and they hit back over the years by taking out each and every man responsible!!
Al-Qaeeda and Osama were taken on very much the same way though more brazenly by US!! May be India should go the Israel way, but it’s high time it did. ‘coz one thing for sure, India has been established as a soft target. And frankly, it hurts deep down when someone questions your nation’s intelligence over the morning cup of coffee or afternoon lunch, coz then whatever you say won’t hold water for the fallacy of the system has been exposed!!

yeah, we will walk on… no one can break our spirit…
but do we keep exposing ourself as a soft target? that is the question we need to answer in teh coming days…

I think the time has arrived for the government to make tough decisions. But unfortunately, I think Manmohan Singh may not be up to the mark for the job - he is too practical We need the likes of yester year leaders, like Churchill with sheer guts. No, exploding a nuclear bomb does not count as guts, I call that a political tactic that gets votes from ignorant voters addicted to the idiot box.
Bangalore shootings, bombings, delhi’s diwali thing and now Mumbai. It is not a single point of failure that causes a disaster like this, it is a chain of event involving ignorance of at least a dozen people that the perpetrators got away with all this.
Where there no metal detectors at the railway station? I have seen Chennai rly station has them, they beep at a lunch box. let alone two bagfull of guns. How come two boat load of people got down at the centre of the city and no one checked who they were? The intelligence agencies got caught napping? Firefighting at the end is not a solution against these, the root causes need to be addressed, at the source.

I wish our secular politicians could understand this as well!
Terrorists are killing innocent people. Where are those Human Rights wala folks now? I am afraid they will start ‘barking’ when the court will sentence these terrorists to death (agar koi zinda bacha to)!

India will walk on. Life goes on. It is not about being an Indian or a Mumbaikar, it is about being a fighter, which everyone is. Americans recovered from 9/11, Israelis recover from acts of terror everyday, north-eastern states live under constant terrors from Maoists, but life goes on.
The point is not bearing all this and moving along. As I said in my post, We need to do something proactive, starting from the root level. We need drastic reforms in our society and constitution and law and order. Don’t ask me where to begin; I don’t have an answer, we’ll have to find one.

One thing you must remember during the days and weeks of pain - do NOT give up your personal freedoms.
Remember Gandhi and his silent protests. Keep the freedoms he helped win for you.

Catmoves, I suppose you are not familiar with India. We grew up hearing “Freedom is our birthright” and that is one thing that is perennial as the wind here.
These incidents are minor as few fellow readers have mentioned, Mumbai will move on, so will India, though that is also worrying.
It should not be something that gets forgotten. As some crazies question basic “freedom” of the masses, India must take notice and act. Gandhi and his silent protests have no place in a war without ethics, where innocents are targeted. We should follow Che if we have to.

Ashes, you know the answer to that question already don’t you? I was just hinting that peaceful protest work against a constituted power, not against a bunch of people who have no sense of ethics, in killing unarmed civilians.
How many of my dear countrymen believe that the ONLY reason for British Raj leaving India was Gandhiji’s
peaceful protest.?
In my own opinion, it had something to do with the allies and global communities good impression
of the Indian soldier’s role in World War II. Around 2 million soldiers from India were involved in the War effort. A war torn Britain would have had a tough time with so many soldiers returning to to India, who would want their country back, also with the good will of the war victims, there was no
way the Raj could continue their oppression. The time would have been perfect for the Raj to pull out and save face by putting forward that they were impressed by the peaceful protests.
History books tell the truth, but whether they are convenient half truths need to be seen.

Gandhiji might not have been the only reason, but I believe it was a very strong reason. It is not about finding out the ONLY or the most powerful reason, but I find it hard to digest when people blame Gandhiji for the partition, and blame him for everything; there are people who say India would have in a better position had Gandhiji not interfered. Read such a comment here.
Re History books telling the truth: do you have another means of knowing what happened? And were all history books written by the British, and they conveniently twisted their stories to save their asses?

Yes, it is sad. You should learn to ignore those fellows, who have such lowly thoughts.
I am party to thought that the Thackerey’s and Modi deserve things better than a Tilak on their foreheads, if only that could happen.

just went to Taj on thursday, also to Leopold’s (my fav place whr I have been thrice aftr coming to mumbai)
And I felt thngs will be normal again…i didnt like all th hulla gulla done by TV channels, not tht much by students and bloggers too saying tht we will change th world
all of them blame the politicians, no one wants to take up thr job too, its all too complicated to be commented upon
some get angry and say bomb the entire country, some get angry towards a particular religion, i wonder what is required, i juss thought tht if the Italian turned Indian would have been our PM she wud hav acted swiftly, I also thought a BJP govt wud have been more active, or Narasimha Rao like thng to not DO anythng wud have worked to…
I have forgotten this and try to move over it, I dont know wht happens next but wht has happened has happened, not only in mumbai but this whole year and last one in mumbai hydbad jaipur surat ahmdabad guwahati bangalore etc etc
