Blogging, a tricky affair ? Part-VI

Contd from Part V

Strike a chord or Stay connected
You need to give others a reason to visit your blog. Further, you also need to give others a reason to continue reading your blog. Focus on finding that reason and, once you do find it, let your readers know.

You have to strike a chord, a connectivity with the reader. Some of your readers will connect while others will not, however hard they try. No power or widget on earth can do this for them. And this happens naturally.

Connectivity means if you are writing a painful post, the readers should be able to feel it. They should be able to relate to it.
I am fortunate I don’t have to do anything to achieve this because I couldn’t have. I am what I am and I pour out how I think.

What I do is that I always try to write in colloquial language .. the way I speak or think. Now, I do not speak English 24X7 in real life but here, I try not to mix any other language (except for a few recent experimented ones) since I have some non-Indian, non-Hindi readers as well. So I remain simple and myself. E.g. If I say this sentence in my daily life as “Oh, you have made up this story.”, I’ll write so and not “Oh, you have concocted this story”. You got my point ?

Personalize it in your own way. If your blog is filled with free articles you’ll end up with a collection of content that is disjointed, that doesn’t personally connect with readers and is devoid of a personality. If it has good stuff blog readers will still subscribe to your blog but see it as a news channel with disjointed collection of articles by a different person every day.
They will subscribe and become loyal to your blog when they feel a personal connection and want to track it over the long haul.

Another example of this.

I wanted to say this but before that I want to show you this. Look here and here. Don’t you think it is saying something like this ?  Blah blah this. Blah blah that.

Now if you, as a blogger, can not write the gist of all these links in 200 words of what you want to convey, how do you expect your readers, who have so many blogs to read, to click on these links or visit these sites and understand ?  Give your readers a link only if it is required, but before that please provide an intro to it.

One more thing is inbuilt courtesy part in me. :)
I write mails. If I find that a commenter does not have a blog and has taken pains to read/comment on my post, I write a mail thanking him/her for the simple reason that I don’t know whether the person is going to come again on my blog or not. So I must thank him to tell how overwhelmed I am by that comment.

Well, this is how I give personalized touch.  Some of you have experienced it. Haven’t you ? :D

On similar lines you can also have your own personalized way to show you care.

Question for you :- Are you finding this series useful enough to continue ?

To be contd ..

I havnt been able to comment on this series of late. So here’s my single combined comment for the entire series.:

Good going girl.. You are doing a great job… Wont be surprised to see a ‘Blogging for Dummies’ on the stand soon. :)

Yes, please continue! Your advice is definitely interesting. Next issue is to follow it. Somehow, it’s difficult to define. Sometimes I don’t know if I write for myself, for others or for which others? Somehow, you end up with a mixed audience, some become your friends and even if you don’t always share exactly the same interests, you wish them back on your blog. Not easy to find the right balance. … and then you know also that there are millions of bloggers around and your own circle is perhaps a few tens, maybe hundreds… You are possibly missing some of those who would share your interests even more. How do you reach them? I can see now that more than 50% of my visitors (not commentators) are people finding an article on the net, by looking for a specific subject. If they don’t leave a “visit card”, I will never reach them.

    Tarun,
    Yeah, will do so.

    Abhi,
    Aren’t you exaggerating ? :P

These are things which I know people should follow but I myself don’t follow some of them.. lazy or whatever….

    Peter,
You have a very valid point here. Many times I too feel so. I have hundreds of visitors coming here searching for something. While I may not contact them, I would definitely like to say a ‘hello’ to people who take pains to leave comment here.

And I must say wordpress scores over blogspot in this regard. You have a blog with blogger(blogspot.com) which does not ask for a mail-id but Wordpress asks for it before a person can comment and hence I can contact my visitors if I want to.

Well, wordpress has much more features than a blogger. I know you are a non-technical person but my advice to you would be to shift your platform. Remember I also had my earlier blog with blogger ? Details on it some other time or thru mail when I come back.
