Blogging, a tricky affair ? Part- VIII

Contd from Part VII

Negative side of providing full feeds.

In one of the earlier posts of this series I spoke about providing full feeds. But do you know it has some negatives as well ?

Full feed makes it easier to keep up with many blogs but it also has a negative side to it. Your traffic rate or hit rate slumps down. People read through the reader and they never visit you.

Now it is for you to decide. What is better - more like minded loyal subscribers (readers) or a few hits from 10-12 known readers ? I would prefer the former. I would want them to read me at THEIR convenience instead of forcing them to visit me on every update.

This is blogworld where most of our readers are those strangers from other parts of the globe whom we may not meet in real life, but have same level of thinking process, likes/dislikes and who read our blogs because they like our writings.
Also, since being a personal blog, ours will not anyway get 1000000 clicks everyday; it is foolish to run the race for most no. of hits.

Had you opened a blog strictly for your own people, you would have denied access to others. Since it is not the case, you better try to care for your readers’ convenience.

One more negative point is that your post can be plagiarized. Your articles, your photos can be stolen and published elsewhere. I have been a victim of this countless no. of times but I still provide full feed to my readers. We will talk about plagiarism in next post.

Another negative point for giving full feed is related to Google reader, which I’ll take up later while discussing it. Again, I mention Google reader solely because I use it.

The question for today’s topic is
Do you know of any other negatives for providing a full feed ? And how do you deal with it ? Comment section is all yours now. :)

To be contd.. ..

“One more negative point is that your post can be plagiarized. Your articles, your photos can be stolen and published elsewhere. ” - How is that related to giving full feed? Can’t it be stolen or published elsewhere even if there is no feed or partial feed ?

Google reader well, I use it, ut dont think I use feeds anymore.
I simply wonder if anyone reads it.

I write/blog for my own pleasure.
    :)
There was a blogger, who advised my long time back to never write for the hits, write for self.
thats what would be my advise for readers of this blog.

Bravo Cuckoo keep up the good work.
    :)

    Padmanabhan,
Yes, one’s stuff can still be stolen in case of partial or no feed but for doing that the plagiarist has to come to the site but his visits can be tracked through many tools available.
If given full feed, the plagiarist does not need to visit the original site or blog and can steal the intellectual property from the feed itself.

    Tarun,
I am one of those who read the feeds. :)

Good that you blog for yourself and do not write for hits.

I guess I’m stupid but I don’t really understand what is meant by “full feed”! I use Google Reader. For all the rest, I agree completelywith what you say! :-)

I had Blog theft once! Apart from that, i feel sometimes, people (Whom we know personally) try to judge us from what we write on the blog. So i try to keep too personal things…most coded as possible. :-)

    Peter,
I have told you earlier too. Full feed means your reader can read your posts without actually visiting your blog. That’s what I do most of the times. :D

    Ajeya,
Yes, I remember that theft. The thief had stolen your story and photos too ! And all of us, your readers went to his blog and had condemned the act. :)
