Don’t overload your page

This post is in continuation of earlier posts on simple tips & tricks on blogging.

Now read further…..
Do not put too many widgets on your site to make it slow. A page usually loads from top down in the order that the HTML is written, so when the browser encounters slow loading javascript, the page stops rendering for sometime. It’s generally easy to identify slow loading part of the page to figure out who exactly the culprit is.

If you are posting some images then resize them before posting as opposed to letting the HTML do this work for you. A size of 500X375 is good enough unless you want to show the intricate details of a photo.
Similarly saving your image with medium quality (instead of max.) saves on image size and does not do any harm to overall post. My all photos are saved in medium quality and I think they still convey what they ought to.

Decide on how many posts you want on front page. More the no. of posts, more time it’ll take to load. Again, whether to show excerpts or full posts depends on you. If you come to my front page you can see, I try to use ‘excerpts’ on my front page - giving readers the title and a taste (a paragraph or two) of each article and the option to click a link to read more. I do it so I can highlight more posts on the front page and shorten the length of the overall page.

While some bloggers don’t like these excerpts/extended entries, some others believe it’s a better way to calculate page views.

Please note, I still provide full RSS feed of (4 different kinds) to my subscribers because I don’t want to force them to come to my site every single time, despite subscribing to my feeds.
I fail to understand what’s the use of a subscription if one can’t provide full feed. Just to let others know that the blog has been updated ? They’d know anyway because you are forcing people to come to your blog to read you.

Similarly, keeping audio/video, flash widget or a virtual pet etc. eats up a chunk of loading time.
If you keep these small things in mind while publishing your page, it’ll definitely do wonders.

Now tell me how your page looks like ?

    Hi,

I read your recent post “Don’t overload your page”. Thank you for the suggestion that not to use many widgets on single page.

I will going to make changes on my website this weekend, so that there is minimum widgets and Java Script code. Now it is only single page, planing to make frames and divide it.

my website is all about web blogs. Where I list some blogs and provide information on blog, bloggers, technology related to blog, any new feature… like this alot about blog.. It is just starting and started a month ago.

    thank you,
    shiva.
